Meet Kylee + Shalayne of Gingerlayne

Sisters and best friend with a zest for life and family, created products that are not only super cute looking but super functional! Handmade in UT.

Meet Kylee + Shalayne!

Tell us a Little about yourseves and your business.

The Gingerlayne magic happens in Farmington, UT. We have designed and hand make two original products to catch spit up and keep baby holders (primarily mama’s right??) clean and happy. The pocket rag is similar to a traditional shoulder burp rag, just lots fancier with a contoured shape for comfort and two super pockets to catch spit up. The burp bib is a one of a kind bib that can be used before, during, and after burping to keep things spit up free while you’re holding your babe and while he/she is playing. We have also just barely released the cutest bandana bibs for drool and smaller amounts of spit up.

How did you come up with your company's name?

We are sisters and each wanted a piece of our branding. ‘Ginger’ comes from Kylee’s red hair and ‘layne’ comes straight from ShaLAYNE. Speaking of names, Kylee has 3 children - each of them with a 4 letter name. Shalayne has 1 currently (and one on the way) with a 4 letter name. Both of our husbands have 4 letter names. It just kind of happened… So each of our product styles was also given a 4 letter name.

What made you start your business and how did you start it?

Our business was inspired by spit up. How does that sound for glamorous, haha. Really though, between the two of us we have raised 4 super adorable super puker babes… We got tired of trying to fold regular rectangle burp rags in crazy ways to catch spit up and cleaning up spit up from EVERYWHERE when that didn’t work and so we decided it was time to create a solution. We spent 6+ months designing our two original products and then opened a Shopify store in April of 2016 to share them with other mamas.

What's it like being a business owner and mom?

It’s a bit of a roller coaster. Before starting our business, it felt impossible to do everything I wanted to as a mother. Add the business, and there’s some extra guilt but also some amazing benefits. I love how interested my children are in what I’m doing for my ‘gingerlayne work’ and trying to involve them in it. They love pressing the shutter release for product pics =). With that said, I do try to do most of my work during nap times and in the evening after I’ve spent some time with my hubby and the kiddos are asleep.

What has been your greatest lesson in business/ motherhood?

Everything is better with your sister!! Seriously, we would both say we couldn’t do motherhood or our business as well without each other. When one of us is at our wits end or feels like giving up, the other has capacity and perspective to help. All the meltdowns, messes, and fight breakups become hilarious when you have someone to tell them about. Not everyone has a blood sister to turn to, so friends totally count as sisters too. We mamas need each other!!

Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs/mothers?

Hmmm. Here’s one specific tip that has helped us in business and motherhood. Use technology to help you. We love using a free organizer called Trello to keep us coordinated and on track for our business. My husband and I also use it for lots of coordination for our family.

What does a “normal” day in your house look like?

We both have hubby’s that work from home and so we usually get to start our days with a morning run while they cuddle our babies, or while everyone still sleeps… Then it’s the get everyone ready for the day shuffle that seems like it should take 30 minutes but seems to drag out for hours ha. Each day is some combination of play/work time at home and outings/errands. Plenty of magical moments and I don’t think I can do this another minute moments. I am very proud of my ability to get my 3 kiddos to nap at the same time. It’s kind of a necessity if I have work to do and to keep my house clean… Our evenings fly by once my husband is done working. I love nights when I cook a yummy dinner and we all sit down and eat together as a family and then take a walk around the neighborhood before the bedtime shuffle.

Besides business and your family, do you have any hobbies you love to enjoy (when you have the time)?

Kylee: If I wasn’t a Mom, I’d be a broadway star by night, a Zumba instructor in the mornings and a newborn baby photographer during the day. Pretty much sums up my hobbies.

Shalayne: My biggest love growing up was soccer. I don’t find much time for it lately (especially now that I have another little in my tummy) but give me a ball and some friends to kick around with and I’m happy as can be. I also love to sew (duh) but I don’t necessarily love sewing just to sew, I love to create new things. Especially clothes for my little :). I also love movie editing and making movies out of fun family events!

The Pocket Rag

The Pocket Rag

I’m a huge coffee lover, and I'm always looking for new types, do you have a particular favorite?

We aren’t coffee drinkers but we looove hot chocolate. Even in the summertime… We’ve had many a Gingerlayne convo over hot chocolate. Shalayne’s fav is a solid mint chocolate or peppermint. Kylee loves Irish creme.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would that be?

Shalayne’s husband is half Japanese and they have traveled there once with their baby girl and would love to go again and again. With children, Kylee is already prepping for a Disneyland vaca in a few years. Sans kiddos, she’d love to go to Europe, anywhere in Europe.

Who have you looked up to the most in life?

We have an amazing and close extended family and every great quality imaginable demonstrated from them. Each of them has in someway shaped me into the person I am today. My number one idol has always been my Aunt Meghan. She is THEEE most generous and capable person I know. You’d all love her. But I’m keeping her as my little secret because she’s already too busy to hang out with me as much as I’d like.

If your children learn one thing from you what would you wish that to be?

Oh, so many things I want them to learn that they probably wouldn’t learn from me… They are already more capable and amazing than me. If I had to pick just one, I want them to learn to challenge themselves and experience the exhilaration that comes from growth and overcoming obstacles.

Don't you just want to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with these two!? But for now go follow them on instagram  @gingerlayne.co  and check out their website www.gingerlayne.com
